LINGARD INSTRUMENTAL TUITION

The instrumental tuition we offer covers piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, voice, brass, violin and viola. All our teachers are highly trained and experienced teachers who teach from home, in Kings Worthy, Winchester or at the pupil’s home.

Trial sessions are available, giving the teacher and the pupil time to get to know each other and ensure that they will form a good partnership. Once the continuation of lessons has been confirmed, a one off registration fee is payable to take advantage of the discounted rates. All the details are available in the registration pack sent to you after your trial lesson, and are also available on the fee page.

We have a total of 13 teachers who offer a fantastic array of approaches to teaching their instrument which enables students to benefit from a totally engaging one to one session, tailor made for each individual.

Here are the profiles of just some of the Lingard teachers…

Xenia Kaspar – violin/viola teacher

I have been working through Lingard since the Easter holidays teaching my private students at home, in Twyford and also at St Peter’s School, Winchester. I live with my partner, Keri, and I have a 7 year old son, Kimon. I originate from Greece and studied the violin and viola at the Music Academy in Vienna. My week is filled with teaching the violin and the viola from beginners to post grade 8 students, both young people and adults and also as a freelance violinist in various ensembles and orchestras.

I became an instrumental teacher, having had a wonderful relationship with my teachers from the start through to University and I was very inspired by how they managed to get the best out of me. The highlight of my career has to be every time one of my students realises their progress and looks at me with a huge grin on their face! I very much enjoy teaching when the student is technically strong and ready to start experimenting with music and sounds. It is amazing what they come up with!! One of my most memorable moments as a teacher was a student was playing a scale for the first time and announced that he found it impossible to play since he had only 4 fingers ( the thumb is situated around the neck of the violin) and the scale had 8 notes!!

Lizzie Collier – singing teacher.

I started working with Lingard last October (2006), and teach singing to pupils of any age or ability (adult or child) and with interests in any type of singing, piano to beginners and music to Group Three (7-9 year-olds) of the Lingard Music Club. I also teach singing at schools in Southampton and Romsey, for Stagecoach in Ringwood and I perform regularly with my own vocal quartet and the London and Southampton Philharmonic Choirs as a soloist as well as a choir member.

I have known for a long time that I wanted to focus on a career in teaching singing. I had my own voice problems during my A levels which led me to learn more about the voice and studied music, singing and speech and language therapy at York University and London. I have a great interest and passion in learning about the voice and helping people overcome their own vocal problems - no matter how small.

The highlight in my career so far has to be becoming a singing teacher for the National Children's Choir of Great Britain but I am lucky that I am in a job where you frequently get highlights in lessons when pupils understand new ideas and apply them to their singing or producing inspiring sounds. I really enjoy the challenges that every individual pupil brings and I feel very privileged to be able to be in a job that I thoroughly enjoy and offers so much variety!

A memorable moment in my teaching was when a pupil, during a singing exercise produced sounds other than a singing tone out their mouth - and I'm not just talking about yawning!

# Peter White – Trumpet/Brass teacher

I have worked with Lingard for two years now and consists of teaching individual pupils at my base at Winchester College, and small groups at St Peter’s Primary School. I teach all brass but specialise in the trumpet and am fortunate to teach from beginners to music students at Southampton University, where I am the Head of Brass Studies.

I am married with two grown up sons - Daniel is a trumpet player, freelancing and teaching in London and Huw is in his final year at the Royal Academy of Music studying jazz piano.

I have had such a full and enjoyable career as a performing musician, that when my sight made it impossible for me to carry on playing at a professional level, I decided to pass on my knowledge to the next generation in the hope that they could gain as much pleasure from music making as I do. I enjoy the challenge of helping pupils with their individual problems and seeing the results when we have found a solution that works for them.

There have been so many highlights in a 42 year career as performer, conductor and teacher, but the one that really sticks in my mind is performing with the London Gabrieli Brass Ensemble at the Carnegie Hall in New York.

The most unusual thing that happened in a lesson was when a pupil had started playing well and without much trouble, but as the lesson progressed all he could manage was a strangulated squeak from the trumpet! We decided that something must be wrong with the instrument - and eventually discovered that his mouthpiece brush had got wedged in the tubing and was virtually cutting off all the airflow! Once removed, all was well!!
